“Interior. Leather Bar.” - Sundance Film Festival

On Saturday, January 19, 2013, I attended the adults-only World Premiere of Interior. Leather Bar. at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The sold-out screening was held in the 336-seat Prospector Square Theatre. The film was a selection in the New Frontier Film section.

The premise is deceptively simple. In 1980, William Friedkin directed the controversial Cruising, in which a New York City cop (Al Pacino) goes undercover in the gay leather bar scene to investigate a series of murders. In order to avoid an X rating from the MPAA, 40 minutes had to be cut out of the film. Presumably, this footage contained explicit homosexual sex acts deemed too pornographic for the censors. James Franco (who has three projects at the festival) and Travis Mathews decide to create a film based on a re-imagining of what the missing portion of the movie might have looked like. There's more to Interior. Leather Bar., though, and it will be left to the viewer to solve the conundrum.

In what has come to be known as "Porndance," this is the one film that truly fits the description. It isn't just one of many Sundance films involving sex and skin this year -- Interior. Leather Bar. is one of several with pornography as its subject (others I saw were Lovelace, Don Jon's Addiction, and The Look of Love). But this is the only one with real, unsimulated sex acts in it. For that reason no ticketholders under 18 were admitted. The scenes are as graphic as one would expect. Yet this is not a pornographic film. In fact, to some extent, it defies categorization and raises more questions than it answers. Interior. Leather Bar. will leave you wondering exactly what it is you just witnessed.

Co-directors James Franco (who also produced & stars) and Travis Mathews (who also wrote, edited, & stars) took the stage after the screening for an enlightening and stimulating Q&A session.

OZ - HBO (prison drama or love story?)

"Oz" is the nickname for the Oswald State Correctional Facility, formerly Oswald State Penitentiary, a fictional maximum-security prison (level 4). The nickname is a reference to the classic film Wizard of Oz, which is notable for popularizing the phrase: "There's no place like home". In contrast, the series has used the tagline: "It's no place like home".

Many of the plot arcs are set in "Emerald City" ("Em City"), also a concept from The Wizard of Oz. In this experimental unit of the prison, unit manager Tim McManus attempts to emphasize rehabilitation and learning responsibility during incarceration, as opposed to pure punishment. Emerald City is an extremely controlled environment in which there is a carefully managed number of members of each racial and social group, with the hope of easing tensions among these various groups.

Under McManus and Warden Leo Glynn, the inmates in Em City all struggle to fulfill their own needs. Some fight for power; either power over the drug trade or power over the other inmate factions. Others, corrections officers and inmates alike, simply want to survive long enough. In particular the prisoners want to make parole or even to see tomorrow. The show gives a no-holds-barred acct of prison life with all the plots, subplots & conflicts given context and explanation by the show's wheelchair-using narrator, Augustus Hill.

Oz chronicles the attempts of McManus to keep control over the inmates of Em City. There are many groups of inmates during the run of the show and not everybody within each group makes it out alive. There are the African American Homeboys (Adebisi, Wangler, Redding, Poet, Keene, Supreme Allah) and Muslims (Said, Arif, Hamid Khan), the Wiseguys (Pancamo, Nappa, Schibetta), the Aryans (Schillinger, Robson, Mark Mack), the Latinos (Alvarez, Morales, Guerra, Hernandez), the Irish (the O'Reily brothers), the gays (Hanlon, Cramer), the bikers (Hoyt), and a number of others (Rebadow, Keller, Stanislofsky). In contrast to the dangerous criminals, regular character Tobias Beecher gives a look at a normal man who made one fatal drunk-driving mistake. The episodes are narrated and held together by inmate Augustus Hill, who provides the show with some context, some sense of humor, etc.
